Blackbird BB2/46 Oriental Blue Set

You may remember that a few weeks ago I got hold of a BB2/46 pen minus the cap. I was glad to get it even in that state because of the beauty of the bright blue material. I don’t know why these pens are such rarities. Perhaps they did not suit the taste of those times or maybe Mabie Todd only got a limited supply of the material.

Anyway Professor Paul Gollan was kind enough to share photos of his fountain pen and pencil set. Isn’t it a stunner!

  1. Am I prejudiced in favour of the oldies? This blue looks so much more intense and brilliant than any current offerings. “Heavenly”.

  2. Hi, Deb. Please tell Tuppence that I have a new boarder whilst her parents are moving interstate (from Victoria to New South Wales). Her name is Potato, and she is a very cute pugalier. Decimus is sulking that he is not the sole focus of attention and has moved to my wife’s place for a few days. Photos attached. Like so many pen enthusiasts I was initially a lover of flex nibs, but your preference for fine points poked me into considering alternatives, especially because your handwriting is more or less the same style as that taught to me in 1959. Unsurprisingly, some points suit me better than others. The Sheaffer Triumph desk pen, truly a nail, gives me great results where some softer ones don’t. I’ve come to the conclusion that a fine italic nib, rather than something more cursive, suits me best. Anyway, thanks for your most stimulating posts, which stand out because you are more attuned to the nuances of pens than most. All the best from the kennel, Michael Dunn and Potato (Decimus MIA).

    1. Hi Michael,
Unfortunately photos don’t seem to attach in comments. I like fine italics too and have a few which I use quite a bit. I can use most nibs but flex is a special purpose nib for me. I’ve been asked to do invitations and place settings from time to time and while I’m no calligrapher I can make a fair crack at it if I take my time. Apart from that it’s all fine or medium firm. Thank you for the comment about the nuances of pens.
